Dark of the Moon
By Howard Richardson and William Berney Directed by Derron Wood, playing from November 9-18
Join us at the Drama Studio for our fall production of Dark of the Moon. The play tells a Romeo and Juliet story set in the Appalachian Mountains in the 1920s. The play centers around the character of John, a witch boy who seeks to be human after having his way with the lusty mortal Barbara Allen. The Conjure woman agrees to his request, as long as he will marry Barbara. If she is faithful to him for a year, he can remain a human. Barbara's mountain clan doesn't approve of John, or Barbara's newborn, a baby witch. The townspeople of Buck Creek take it upon themselves to right Barbara's sin of cavorting with a witch and lead the play to its tragic conclusion.
Dark of the Moon was written by Howard Richardson and William Berney and had a run on Broadway in the 1940s. The play was inspired by the traditional British folksong "Barbara Allen."
