The Moon Before Yule
And other Important dates before the end of the season!
Celebrate the Winter Solstice Tonight! Monday, December 17 108 Sun Salutes will help bring in the light, on the darkest night of the year! (The Solstice is actually on Friday night the 21st of December)
Celebrate with the Heartsong Yogis and Yoginis at 7:30 pm tonight, practicing 108 Sun Saluations (or any variations of your choosing) $20.00 and all proceeds will be donated to the Siddhartha School in Ladak, India, for the student we support there.
This question is always asked: Why 108? What is the significance? On a mala, or set of mantra counting beads, there are generally 108 beads, or some fraction of that number. Regardless of the meaning of 108, it is important that if a mala is used to count mantras, the mantra be remembered with sincerity, devotion, feeling, and full attention. Desires: There are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals. Lies: There are said to be 108 lies that humans tell. Delusions: There are said to be 108 human delusions or forms of ignorance. (This list goes on and on, with astrology, mythology, and cosmology from many traditions.) Here is a wonderful resource to learn more, or, come out tonight and play! Click Here!
Origins of Solstice Celebration In pre-historic times, winter was a very difficult time for Aboriginal people in the northern latitudes. The growing season had ended and the tribe had to live off of stored food and whatever animals they could catch. The people would be troubled as the life-giving sun sank lower in the sky each noon. They feared that it would eventually disappear and leave them in permanent darkness and extreme cold. After the winter solstice, they would have reason to celebrate as they saw the sun rising and strengthening once more. Although many months of cold weather remained before spring, they took heart that the return of the warm season was inevitable. The concept of birth and or death/rebirth became associated with the winter solstice. The Aboriginal people had no elaborate instruments to detect the solstice. But they were able to notice a slight elevation of the sun's path within a few days after the solstice -- perhaps by DEC-25. Celebrations were often timed for about the 25th.
