Astanga Yoga

(sometimes called Power Yoga)
It is a hot and flowing, challenging practice for those wanting a more athletic pace. If you are brand new to yoga make sure you start in the Astanga Course or Astanga I drop in classes. If you already practice yoga and are ready to learn Astanga, still try to make it to the Level I classes for a while, for details and full understanding of the flow.

  • Astanga I is a modified practice with more details, good for newer students, great practice for all.
  • Astanga I/II is the full primary series, dipping sometimes into second series, usually in the first week of each new month.
  • Astanga II is second series practice, and not appropriate for new students of Astanga Yoga, unless by invitation of the instructor. You should be fully versed in Primary Series, and have a regular practice. Second Series practice includes more back bending and twists, and a good strong primary series practice prepares you for second series.

If you are newer to Astanga Yoga, and come to a drop in class, you may be invited to stop and to watch practice from time to time, be prepared to "practice" being a real beginner, and take your time to learn the full series. If you want to simply "watch" a pratice, either primary or second series, please ask the instructor for permission first, but we would love to have new students observe class, especially a second series class!
