Heartsong, Sheila Magalhaes and Yoga Ed.
Heartsong Yoga's director Sheila Magalhaes has been teaching, volunteering and offering her services to the East Longmeadow and surrounding school systems since she received her first certification to teach yoga 1993 from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. She has since gone on to receive her professional level of training from Kripalu Center, as well as another professional training from the Hard and the Soft Yoga Training Institute with Beryl Bender Birch in the practice of Astanga Yoga.
In 2006, Sheila was certified by the originators of the Yoga Ed. Program, Tara Gruber and Leah Kalish to teach Yoga Ed. Tools for Teachers.
Over the years Sheila has worked with after school programs for students and has given numerous in service trainings and workshops to teachers, para professionals, administrators, school nurses and even the school lunch service providers from pre school through High School in the greater Springfield area. Sheila also teaches at Springfield College as an adjunct professor in their School of Human Services and taught The Practice, Philosophy and Ethics of Yoga at the undergrad level there for over 7 years as well.
Sheila and her husband Tony have been volunteering to teach the athletes in ELHS's cross country and track & field to both boys and girls. Sheila has brought home day care and pre school providers to the Heartsong Studio for training and has invited in pre school children and their teachers and parents for yoga classes. Local college professors have brought their classes in for "field trips" to Heartsong Yoga, and Sheila has been invited into their classrooms for lectures and experiential workshops for yoga, stress reduction and relaxation training. Since her introduction to Yoga Ed., she has been able to introduce this very professional, extraordinary training to all of the elementary schools in the East Longmeadow school system, and to the St. Mary's School in Longmeadow, MA.
The Yoga Ed. Tools for Teachers Program is comprised of simple yoga based exercises designed for the classroom. These activities integrate and energize the mind-body in 5 to fifteen minutes. No yoga experience is required, this practice is accessible to all body shapes and sizes, and is non competitive and teaches compassion and loving kindness. No extra space is required, so you can practice these tools anywhere, anytime. Yoga Ed. Teaches effective behavior and class management, to enhance focus, concentration, creativity, communication and discipline.
